The Color of Beauty

Yesterday I came across this video on the Internet.  The Color of Beauty is a documentary that follows an up and coming model Renee Thompson.  It’s a very short documentary but it made me think about what is it about black a woman that does not fit into advertising.  As a teenager I modeled for a very short period of time and one of the biggest problems I had was the constant weight ins and fixes that I needed.  Personally I felt that I could find many issues with myself without someone else telling me what was wrong with me.  I admire women who aspire to be top models because I can only imagine what they may have to go through to get to that point.
When I first considered starting my boutique I looked for vintage black or Hispanic pin up girls and I could not find any. I’m sure they existed in the 50’s but somehow they weren’t popular.  Is that strictly because they were black?  I find it hard to believe that service men had pinups of white women since it was frowned upon.  I never wanted to make this about race and racism because I believe that in order to eradicate racism you have to have true equality.  There has to be no line between Black, White, Hispanic or Asian.  The prejudices that people have about other races and racial jokes have to stop.  My children are multiracial so I hope that when they grow up and have children that racism will truly be a thing of the past.
